The variegated vanilla bean orchid (Vanilla planifolia) is a rare climbing orchid with creamy, striped foliage and the same species that produces true vanilla beans. Its long, vining stems and marbled leaves make it a striking statement plant for bright indoor spaces, greenhouses, and warm conservatories.
Unlike many orchids, this one grows as a vining plant that can be trained up a trellis, pole, or wall. With time, support, and the right conditions, it can produce fragrant orchid blooms that, when hand‑pollinated, develop into vanilla pods. Even without flowers, the bold variegation and unusual growth habit make it a standout in any collection.

Plant care
• Light: Bright, indirect light is best. It will appreciate strong filtered light but should be protected from harsh, direct midday sun to avoid leaf burn.
• Water: Keep the potting mix lightly moist but not soggy. Water thoroughly when the top layer of the mix begins to dry, and allow excess water to drain completely.
• Soil: Use a very well‑draining, airy mix similar to an orchid or aroid blend (bark, chunky perlite, and a bit of high‑quality potting mix or coco). Good airflow around the roots is important.
• Humidity: Prefers higher humidity, ideally above average household levels. Grouping with other plants, using a humidifier, or placing near a pebble tray can help.
• Temperature: Loves warmth and does best in consistently warm indoor conditions. Protect from cold drafts and keep away from temperatures below about 60°F.
• Growth habit: A climbing vine that needs support. Provide a trellis, moss pole, or other structure and gently secure the stems as they grow to encourage strong, upright growth.
• Pet safety: Vanilla orchids are generally not considered highly toxic, but any non‑food plant should be kept out of reach of pets and children who may chew on leaves.
