Piper ornatum | Celebes Pepper Vine with Silver-Pink Veined Leaves
Piper ornatum | Celebes Pepper
Piper ornatum, commonly known as Celebes Pepper, is a striking tropical climbing vine native to Sulawesi, Indonesia. Prized for its beautifully patterned foliage, this unusual member of the pepper family produces heart-shaped, deep green leaves traced with an intricate network of silvery pink and soft white veining. The undersides often reveal rich burgundy tones, while new growth emerges with especially vibrant coloring.
A vigorous and rewarding grower, Piper ornatum is equally happy climbing a moss pole or trailing from a hanging planter. Given something to climb, it can develop larger, more impressive leaves that really show off its intricate patterns.
It's a wonderful addition to a houseplant collection, tropical greenhouse, or humid terrarium. With its remarkable foliage and relatively straightforward care, Celebes Pepper brings a little botanical drama without being overly demanding.
Plant Care
-
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Gentle morning sunshine is welcome, but avoid intense afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
-
Water: Allow the top inch or so of potting mix to dry between waterings. Keep the roots lightly moist but never waterlogged.
-
Humidity: Appreciates higher humidity, ideally 60% or above. Particularly well suited to greenhouse cabinets, humidifiers, and larger terrariums.
-
Temperature: Thrives between 65–85°F. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F.
-
Soil: Use a loose, well-draining mix containing orchid bark, coco coir, perlite, and a little compost or worm castings.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during active growth.
-
Growth Habit: A climbing or trailing vine. Provide a moss pole or trellis to encourage larger foliage, or allow it to cascade naturally.
-
Pruning & Propagation: Trim growing tips to encourage branching and fuller growth. Stem cuttings can be rooted in water or moist sphagnum moss.
