Hydnophytum papuanum – Ant Plant 4″

One of the stranger plants in the shop - and there’s a lot more going on here than meets the eye.

Hydnophytum papuanum is a tropical myrmecophyte, or “ant plant,” native to New Guinea. As it grows, the base of the plant develops into an enlarged, sculptural structure called a caudex. Inside is a natural network of chambers and passageways that, in the wild, provides shelter for ants.

The relationship benefits both sides: ants gain a protected home while their waste and accumulated organic material provide nutrients to the plant. You do not need ants to grow it indoors - the plant grows perfectly well without them.

Above the caudex, branching stems produce glossy green leaves, eventually giving the plant the appearance of a wonderfully odd little tree growing from a swollen base.

Care

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Gentle morning sun is usually well tolerated.

Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the growing medium to partially dry before watering again. Avoid keeping the roots or caudex continuously wet.

Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity and good airflow.

Temperature: A true tropical - keep warm, ideally around 65–85°F, and protect from cold temperatures and drafts.

Growing medium: Use a very airy, fast-draining mix. Hydnophytum naturally grows as an epiphyte, so its roots appreciate plenty of oxygen rather than dense, water-retentive soil.

Growth: The caudex becomes larger and increasingly sculptural with age, making older specimens particularly impressive.

Pot size: 4″ nursery pot.

Part houseplant, part natural ant apartment complex - Hydnophytum papuanum is a fascinating choice for anyone who likes plants with a good evolutionary backstory.
