Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’ is the drama kid of the rubber tree world—in the best way. Its thick, glossy leaves are splashed with creamy white and soft green, with a blush of pink on fresh growth that looks ridiculously good in a bright corner. It has that “statement plant” energy without demanding you redesign your entire living room around it (unless you want to).
This plant likes bright, indirect light to keep its variegation bold and crisp. Too dark, and it will sulk and put out more plain green; too much harsh, direct sun, and the pale parts can scorch. Let the top part of the soil dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and empty any excess from the saucer—rubber trees hate sitting in a swamp.
At The Accidental Plant Shop, we love ‘Tineke’ as a “grown‑up plant” for people who still want color and pattern. It plays beautifully with terracotta pots, neutral interiors, and all your moody greens. Give it some time and a steady routine, and it will slowly turn into a small indoor tree you’ll be weirdly proud of.
Light: Bright, indirect light; a few hours of soft morning sun is okay, avoid strong afternoon sun.
Water: Let the top 1–2" of soil dry out, then water well and drain; keep soil lightly moist, not soggy.
Soil: Well‑draining potting mix with some added perlite or bark is ideal.
Humidity: Fine in normal home humidity, but appreciates a bit more if your air is very dry.
Temperature: Likes consistent indoor temps; keep away from cold drafts and blasts of hot air.
Growth habit: Upright tree‑form; can be pruned to keep compact and bushy.
