Chlorophytum comosum, better known as the classic spider plant, is one of those ride‑or‑die houseplants that hangs in there no matter what life throws at you. It sends out long, arching leaves from the center of the pot and, when it’s happy, throws out little baby plantlets on long stems like tiny green comets. It looks great in a hanging basket or on a high shelf where the foliage and babies can spill down.
This is a “forgiving but not boring” plant. It prefers bright, indirect light but will tolerate a bit of everything—from an east window to a brighter corner across the room. Let the top of the soil dry before you water again, and don’t panic if you see the occasional brown tip; that’s often just minerals in the water or dry air, not a plant emergency.
At The Accidental Plant Shop, we love spider plants for new plant parents, busy people, and anyone who wants an easy hanging plant that still feels lush. They grow quickly in the right conditions, so you get that satisfying “look, it’s bigger!” moment without having to fuss over it every day.
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal; can handle medium light, too.
Water: Let the top inch of soil dry out, then water thoroughly and let excess water drain.
Soil: Standard, well‑draining potting mix works well.
Humidity: Content in normal home humidity; higher humidity is a bonus but not required.
Temperature: Happy in typical indoor temps; protect from cold drafts.
Growth habit: Arching, fountain‑like foliage with baby plantlets on long stems.
