Sedum morganianum, commonly called Donkey’s Tail or Burro’s Tail, is a trailing succulent with long, rope‑like stems packed with plump, teardrop leaves. It looks like a living braid of blue‑green beads spilling over the edge of its pot. As it grows, the stems can get impressively long, making it a real showpiece in a hanging basket or on a high shelf.

This plant loves bright light and doesn’t appreciate heavy, frequent watering. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings, then water deeply and let every bit of extra water drain away. The leaves are delicate and can pop off if bumped, but you can tuck those fallen leaves back into the soil to root and start new plants.

At The Accidental Plant Shop, we like Donkey’s Tail for anyone who wants a slightly dramatic, “I collected this from a sunny cliffside” vibe. Give it a bright window, a pot that drains well, and a bit of space to drape, and it will slowly turn into a cascading cloud of chubby, soft‑looking foliage.

Care

  • Light: Bright, indirect to bright filtered light; some direct morning sun is ideal, avoid harsh all‑day, hot sun on the glass.

  • Water: Let soil dry out completely between waterings; water thoroughly, then drain. This succulent prefers drought over soggy roots.

  • Soil: Very well‑draining cactus/succulent mix; avoid heavy, peat‑only soils.

  • Humidity: Low to average household humidity is perfect; too much humidity plus wet soil can cause rot.

  • Temperature: Happy in typical indoor temps; protect from frost and cold drafts.

  • Growth habit: Trailing succulent with long, pendulous stems and easily rooted leaves.
