Pilea peperomioides, also known as the Chinese Money Plant or Pancake Plant, is a compact, evergreen houseplant loved for its perfectly round, coin‑shaped leaves that hover on slender stems. Native to the cool, mountainous regions of southern China, it thrives indoors in bright, indirect light and adds a clean, modern silhouette to any room.
Each glossy, lily‑pad‑like leaf is attached at the center of the leaf underside, giving this plant its playful UFO look on a tidy, upright plant that typically reaches 8–12” tall and wide in a pot. Over time, mature plants often produce little “pups” at the base that can be separated and shared, which is why it’s often called the Friendship Plant.
This is an easygoing houseplant that adapts well to average home humidity and normal indoor temperatures, as long as it’s kept out of cold drafts and intense, hot sun. It’s generally considered non‑toxic and safe to have around pets and kids, making it a great pick for gifting or for high‑traffic living spaces.
