A living mosaic in cactus form. Opuntia cochenillifera ‘Variegata’ grows flat, paddle-shaped pads splashed with cream, butter yellow, and soft green in a marbled pattern. No two pads are alike, and new growth often shows the boldest color. This variegated form stays more compact and grows more slowly than the standard species, so it works well on a sunny windowsill, a patio, or in a mixed succulent display.
It is also almost spineless, with few or no long spines, which makes it one of the friendlier prickly pears to keep. It is a great pick for collectors who want something sculptural, colorful, and easy to care for.
Each plant is unique. Variegation pattern, pad count, and shape will vary from the photos.
Care:
• Light: Bright light with at least 5 hours of direct sun a day. Strong light keeps the variegation vivid, and pads turn greener in low light.
• Water: Water deeply, then let the soil dry out completely. Cut back to about once every 4 to 6 weeks in winter. When in doubt, wait.
• Soil: Gritty, fast-draining cactus mix. Adding pumice or coarse sand helps.
• Temperature: Does best above 70°F during the growing season. It likes a cool, dry rest at 40 to 50°F in winter. Protect it from frost and bring it indoors when nights stay below 40°F.
• Handling: It has few spines but still has tiny glochids (fine barbed bristles) in the areoles. Handle it with tongs, folded newspaper, or thick gloves.
• Growth: Branches into new pads over time. Pads can be removed, left to callus, and rooted to make new plants.
• Pet info: Generally considered non-toxic. The glochids can still irritate mouths and paws, so keep it out of reach of curious pets.
