Hoya ‘Sunrise’ – Grower’s Select

Hoya ‘Sunrise’ is a gorgeous hybrid Hoya loved for its dramatic foliage and its ability to develop incredible color in bright light. The elongated leaves have prominent veining over a deep green background, but with increased light they can sun-stress to rich shades of burgundy, red, and deep purple.

Part of our Grower’s Select collection, these plants come from Girl Run Farm, a local nursery specializing in Hoyas. They are locally grown and selected with an emphasis on strong growth, quality, and exceptional characteristics.

A cross between Hoya lacunosa and Hoya obscura, ‘Sunrise’ combines beautiful foliage with a manageable vining growth habit. The contrast between fresh green growth and richly sun-stressed mature leaves can make an established plant particularly striking.

It’s also a rewarding bloomer. Mature plants can produce clusters of small, fuzzy, star-shaped flowers with a sweet fragrance.

Care Highlights

• Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Some gentle direct light can encourage the characteristic red and burgundy sun-stressing.

• Water: Allow the potting mix to partially dry between thorough waterings.

• Soil: Use a loose, airy and fast-draining Hoya or epiphytic mix.

• Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity with good airflow.

• Growth: Vining and branching; beautiful trailing or trained around a trellis.

• Sun-stressing: Brighter light can transform the foliage from green to rich shades of red, burgundy, and purple.

• Blooming: Mature plants can produce clusters of fragrant, fuzzy flowers.

• Peduncles: Leave old peduncles intact, as they can flower repeatedly.

• Pet safety: Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
