Hoya shepherdii – Grower’s Select

Hoya shepherdii, sometimes called the String Bean Hoya, is an unusual species with long, narrow foliage that gives it a completely different look from broad-leaved Hoyas. The slender, slightly curved leaves grow densely along trailing vines, eventually creating a wonderfully full, cascading plant.

Part of our Grower’s Select collection, these plants come from Girl Run Farm, a local nursery specializing in Hoyas. They are locally grown and selected with an emphasis on strong growth, quality, and exceptional characteristics.

Hoya shepherdii is particularly well suited to a hanging pot or elevated shelf where its long vines can cascade naturally. Mature plants can also produce clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers, adding another reason to grow this already distinctive species.

Care Highlights

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal and helps encourage flowering.

  • Water: Allow the potting mix to partially dry between thorough waterings.

  • Soil: Use a chunky, airy and fast-draining Hoya or epiphytic mix.

  • Humidity: Adaptable to average household humidity but appreciates moderately higher humidity.

  • Growth: Trailing and vining, with long, narrow foliage that creates a cascading habit.

  • Blooming: Mature plants can produce clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers when grown in good light.

  • Peduncles: Leave old peduncles intact, as Hoyas can flower repeatedly from them.

  • Pet safety: Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
