Hoya nicholsoniae

Hoya nicholsoniae is a beautiful species Hoya with substantial, elongated leaves and a classic climbing growth habit. The foliage is deep green with prominent veining, and under brighter light the leaves can develop attractive reddish or bronze sun-stressing.

Native to the tropical regions of Australia and the southwest Pacific, Hoya nicholsoniae is a rewarding species for collectors who appreciate Hoyas for their foliage as much as their flowers. Given a trellis or other support, it will climb readily and develop into an impressive specimen.

Mature plants produce rounded clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers in soft yellow to cream tones, often with contrasting centers.

Care Highlights

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Some gentle direct light can encourage sun-stressing and flowering.
  • Water: Allow the potting mix to partially dry between thorough waterings.
  • Soil: Use a chunky, airy and fast-draining Hoya or epiphytic mix.
  • Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity with good air circulation.
  • Growth: Climbing and vining; providing a trellis or support is recommended.
  • Color: Foliage may develop bronze to reddish tones when grown in brighter light.
  • Blooming: Mature plants can produce clusters of waxy flowers when given sufficient light and consistent care.
  • Peduncles: Do not remove spent peduncles, as they can bloom again.
  • Pet safety: Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
