4” Rabbit’s Foot Fern

The Rabbit’s Foot Fern (Davallia sp.) is a wonderfully quirky fern known for the soft, fuzzy rhizomes that creep across the surface of the pot and eventually spill over the edges like little “rabbit feet.” Above them, delicate green fronds create a lush, airy canopy with plenty of texture and movement.

Unlike many ferns, Rabbit’s Foot Ferns prefer their potting mix to dry slightly between waterings rather than remaining constantly wet. The fuzzy rhizomes should always sit on top of the soil, never buried, where they can continue creeping and branching as the plant matures.

Light: Bright, indirect light to medium indirect light. Avoid strong afternoon sun.

Water: Water thoroughly when the upper layer of the potting mix begins to dry. Keep it lightly and evenly moist during active growth, but avoid soggy soil.

Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity and is especially happy in bathrooms, kitchens or grouped with other tropical plants.

Soil: Use a loose, well-draining mix that retains some moisture while allowing plenty of airflow around the roots.

Rhizomes: Keep the fuzzy “feet” above the soil surface. As the plant grows, allow them to naturally crawl over the rim of the pot.

Temperature: Prefers typical warm indoor temperatures and protection from cold drafts and heating vents.

Pet Friendly: Rabbit’s Foot Fern is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate

With the right balance of moisture, humidity and indirect light, Rabbit’s Foot Fern develops into a beautifully full specimen with those wonderfully strange fuzzy feet becoming more prominent with age.
