Begonia ‘Manaus’ is one of those plants people immediately want to reach out and touch. The leaves have a soft, fuzzy texture and a gentle sheen, so the whole plant looks a bit velvety when the light hits it. Rounded foliage grows on arching stems, creating a loose, cascading mound that feels more like a mini jungle than a stiff, upright houseplant.
This cultivar is a hybrid between Begonia soli‑mutata and Begonia thelmae, and you can see both parents in it: the shifting tones and texture from soli‑mutata, and the smaller, trailing habit from thelmae. It’s happiest in bright, indirect light with a steady, “lightly moist” watering routine. Let the top of the soil dry just a bit, then water thoroughly and let the extra drain—its roots and stems are not fans of sitting in a swamp. It also appreciates a bit of extra humidity, making it a great fit for terrariums, plant shelves with lots of neighbors, or any cozy corner that doesn’t get blasted by hot, dry air.
At The Accidental Plant Shop, we like ‘Manaus’ for plant people who want something textural and a little collectible without going full high‑maintenance diva. Give it a good spot, trim it back if it starts to wander, and it will reward you with a soft, cascading curtain of fuzzy leaves.
Light: Bright, indirect light; keep it out of harsh, direct afternoon sun.
Water: Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist; let the top bit dry before you water again, and never let it sit in a soggy saucer.
Soil: Likes a loose, airy mix that drains well and doesn’t pack down into a brick.
Humidity: Happiest with a little extra humidity—great in terrariums or tucked in with other plants—but will sulk in very dry, hot air.
Temperature: Comfort‑zone houseplant; keep it in steady indoor temps and away from cold drafts or blasting heat.
Growth habit: Low, spreading, and cascading; trim wandering stems to encourage a fuller, fuzzier mound of leaves.
